Zambia’s Roan copper processing plant reached nominal production capacity in early September 2022

Jubilee Metals has been developing a strategy for several years in southern Zambia aimed at producing 12,000 tonnes of copper annually. The Roan Refinery is an essential element in achieving this objective.

Mining company Jubilee Metals has made another breakthrough in its Southern Copper Refining strategy to produce 12,000 tonnes of copper annually in Zambia. On Monday, September 5, it announced that its Roan copper processing plant had reached its design capacity of 110 tonnes per hour.

Above all, the successful ramp-up of Roan will enable Jubilee to transfer its project development teams to the Northern Refining project. In the north of the country, the company is piloting a project to rehabilitate a copper and cobalt refinery, thanks to an agreement concluded in 2020 with Mopani Copper Mines. It is aiming for an annual production of 17,000 tons of copper.

It should be noted that these various projects are taking place in a rather favorable context in Zambia, because the government is determined to make it easier for investors to increase national copper production. This determination can be explained in particular by the importance that copper will have in the energy transition, particularly for the booming electric vehicle industry.
